FILMSBubble Boy (2001)Make no mistake: This is a dumb, ridiculous movie. It also happens to be pretty darn funny. The two are not mutually exclusive. I wouldn't say that this is "slap-nuts, fall-down" funny, but there are a few moments here and there that honestly made me laugh out loud. At this point, you are free to make any character judgements upon me and my upbringing. The premise is fairly straight-forward: Bubble-Boy can't go outside of his bubble because he'd die. He falls in love with a girl and has to make a cross-country odyssey to inform her of his loveof course, she's getting married in a few days, so times awastin'! Along his trip, our intrepid Bubble Boy meets myriad helpful strangers including, but not limited to, bikers, evangelists, honest-to-God circus freaks, and one enthusiastic, screaming Asian. ("Five-hundred dollars!!!!"). I'm not going to lie to you: A friend really wanted to see this movie (he's into silly comedies, but what can you do?), and because I don't get to see this particular friend very often, I acquiesced to his wishes while ambulating through the video store aisles. But I won't put the onus all on him. A small part of me wanted to see this movie, if for no other reason than it stars Jake Gyllenhaal. You may or may not recognize the name and the face. He starred in October Sky and, more recently, Donnie Darko. Both are must-seesthis guy is superb. Another reason I'd suggest this film: Look at the picture to the right. She's the Bubble Boy's love interest. For those of you with any sort of vision impairment, I will point out that she's very easy on the eyes. For those of you with 20/20 vision, you may continue your drool-fest. Would Bubble Boy be worth paying full-price admission at the movies? No, definitely not. I wouldn't have complained too much if I saw it during a matinee showing. I saw this on DVD, splitting the cost with my friend. So, all things considered, I got a pretty good deal. I'd recommend this film if you're interested in a love-story comedy that has a little humor and a heart. And makes you damn glad you don't have walk around in a bubble. |
